A CDC QuickStats from the National Vital Statistics System compares U.S. death rates for pedestrians hit by motor vehicles in 2021 across racial and ethnic groups.

In 2021, 8,392 people died in pedestrian collisions with motor vehicles.

Bar chart of 2021 age-adjusted death rates for pedestrians in collisions with motor vehicles, per 100,000: far highest for American Indian or Alaska Native people, then Black, Hispanic, White and Asian people.

GroupDeaths per 100,000 (age-adjusted)
American Indian or Alaska Native8.2
Black or African American4.4
Hispanic or Latino3.0
White1.9
Asian1.4

The rate for American Indian or Alaska Native people was the highest of any group.

Notes

  • Rates are deaths per 100,000 of the U.S. standard population, age-adjusted.
  • Deaths were counted where a pedestrian collision with a motor vehicle — on or off a public road — was the underlying cause of death (ICD-10 codes V02–V04 and V09[.0, .2]).
  • Hispanic people may be of any race; the other groups are non-Hispanic. Rates for Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Hispanic people may be affected by misclassification of race and Hispanic origin on death certificates.
