What it is
Rotavirus is a virus that causes gastroenteritis. Almost every child in the U.S. is likely to be infected before age 5.
Symptoms
- severe diarrhea
- vomiting
- fever
- dehydration
How it spreads
- Infections peak in winter and spring.
- Children spread it very easily to other children, and sometimes to adults.
- It takes about two days after infection to get sick.
- Vomiting and diarrhea can last three to eight days.
Treatment
There's no medicine for it. The goal is to prevent dehydration:
- give your child plenty of liquids;
- your provider may suggest oral rehydration drinks;
- some children need IV fluids in the hospital.
Prevention
Two vaccines protect against rotavirus.
