Støtte

If you're pregnant or planning a baby, you probably know smoking threatens your health and your baby's, and many women set out to quit at this time. In 2021, 4.6% of mothers smoked cigarettes at some point during pregnancy.

When to quit

  • Before pregnancy is best for you and your baby.
  • During pregnancy, quitting still helps protect you both.
  • A healthy pregnancy while smoking in the past doesn't mean it's safe to smoke in the next one.

Smoking can cause serious problems: your baby may be born too early or with a birth defect.

After the birth

Some women think it's safe to start again once the baby is born. It isn't — your baby is still at risk:

  • babies who breathe secondhand smoke are more likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS);
  • babies around cigarette smoke have weaker lungs;
  • they are more likely to get ear infections and breathing problems.

Quitting is hard, but worth it: you'll improve your chances of a healthy baby, breathe better, and find it much easier to be active.

Amanda's story

Amanda B., 30, from Wisconsin, began smoking in fifth grade and smoked while she was pregnant. Her daughter was born 2 months early and spent weeks in an incubator. Amanda remembers her baby's cry most of all — not the loud wail of a typical newborn, but a soft, tiny one. Her story is one of CDC's Tips From Former Smokers campaign's Real Stories; read Amanda's.
