Artemis II Trans Lunar Injection

Artemis II Mission Specialist Christina Koch talks about the amazing maneuver that will propel the Orion spacecraft and its crew around low Earth orbit, towards the Moon, and home again. Known as TLI, or Trans Lunar Injection, this single event sets the path for the entire Artemis II mission.

What is said in the film

The Artemis II mission. At its heart is a test mission of the Orion space capsule. This is going to be the first time that humans have ridden inside that capsule, and that everything on board keeps us alive. The mission itself consists of a couple big orbits and very high orbits around Earth, and then doing a trans lunar injection burn to the moon. Our TLI burn.

The burn that gets us going to the moon is also our deorbit burn. And what that means is, as soon as we take that burn, we have bought off on the basically the rest of the mission. Save a couple options to do a U-turn burn that are in there as well. But the truth is, we are reentering before and at the moment we do TLI. And recognizing that our team has to be ready for that full mission as soon as we buy in.

That is a really interesting risk posture, and that's why I'm so glad we have spent so much time with our team. Super integrated. It's been a quite a journey getting to have the technical know how on this vehicle as much as we have and as an engineer, I've I've really loved that process.
