Bamboo mailing container

This cylindrical bamboo stalk was used as a mailing container and has five US stamps affixed: 4 20c James Garfield and one 10c John Tyler, for postage.

USMC Captain E L Frase, 3rd Marine Division Postal Officer, sent a multi-page, typed letter (in accession file) and painting from his field post office to Chief Post Office Inspector J. Donalson in Washington, DC. The painting (see also 2009.2004.54.2) by Marine combat artist Pvt. Paul Ellsworth depicted the V-Mail station constructed of similar bamboo stalks and canvas.
