East versus west

Using the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regions:

  • Regions 1–5, mostly east of the Mississippi River, had higher rates.
  • Regions 6–10, west of the Mississippi, had lower rates.

How the rates were counted

  • Deaths: underlying cause of death coded X40–X44, X60–X64, X85 or Y10–Y14 in the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, with cocaine (T40.5) among the multiple causes.
  • Age adjustment: the direct method, using the 2000 U.S. population.
  • Territories: the rates for Region 2 (New York and New Jersey) and Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada) leave out territories and associated states.
