COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2. There are two kinds of test for it.
Viral tests: are you infected now?
A viral test tells you whether you have a current infection. Viral tests are either rapid or laboratory tests:

Antibody tests: were you infected before?
An antibody (serology) test might show whether you had an infection in the past.
Getting a test
- Buy a self-test online or in a shop — make sure it has been authorised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
- Check your state or local health department's website for testing in your area.
- Contact your health care provider.
A negative result
Even if a viral test is negative — it did not detect the virus — keep taking steps to protect yourself and others.
