E-cigarette cases reported to U.S. poison centers rose from 2010 to 2014, fell from 2015 to 2017, then climbed again: up 25% from 2,320 in 2017 to 2,901 in 2018, when nearly two-thirds (63.3%) involved children under 5. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analyzed the latest year of data from the National Poison Data System (NPDS) — April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023 — and found the numbers still rising, especially among young children.
The numbers
7,043 e-cigarette or e-liquid exposures were reported. Monthly cases rose 32%, from 476 in April 2022 to 630 in March 2023.

Brands
Brand was recorded in only 342 cases (4.9%) — NPDS has product codes for just 16 e-cigarette brands, and they're optional. Of those:
| Brand | Share |
|---|---|
| Elf Bar | 60.8% |
| JUUL | 16.1% |
| Vuse | 9.1% |
| Pop Vape | 5.8% |
| Puff Bar | 4.1% |
| Other | 4.1% |
Elf Bar, a disposable e-cigarette sold in many flavors whose U.S. sales have recently grown, was reported more often than all other brands combined. Monthly Elf Bar cases rose from 2 in April 2022 to 36 in March 2023, and more than 90% involved children under 5.
What it means
Most cases were young children. Reporting to poison centers is voluntary, so the true number is likely higher. Continued surveillance is key to preventing e-cigarette poisonings. Health care providers, public health workers, e-cigarette makers and sellers, and the public should know that e-cigarettes can poison — and adults who use them should store e-cigarettes and e-liquids where young children can't reach them.
