Four missions, still centres of community after three hundred years

San Antonio Missions is a National Park Service site and **the only UNESCO
World Heritage Site in Texas**.

**Each mission in the park is a centre of community, and has been since the
early 1700s.** Present tense: these are not preserved ruins but working
places, three centuries on.

The park does not present that as a simple good. The missions **changed life
in this region, introducing new technologies while enforcing new cultural
guidelines** — and visitors are asked to reflect on **change, culture, power,
and how people have used the land**. Both halves are stated, which is the more
honest framing and the more interesting one.

The chain

Park headquarters is 4 miles south of downtown San Antonio, and the four
missions lie in a chain running south:

The weather

Temperatures typically range from 40°F to 95°F, rarely below 29°F or above
100°F.

• Warm season, May–September: average daily high above 90°F, low 75°F
• Cold season, November–February: average daily high below 68°F,
  average low 40°F

Relative humidity runs 40–80% through the year, which the park notes "can
be very uncomfortable to many people" — an unusually direct warning, and worth
believing when the walk between missions is outdoors.
