The National Park Service's Mid-Atlantic Inventory and Monitoring Network tracks ecosystem "vital signs", including weather and climate. This is its summary of 2022 at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, averaging data for the surrounding Caroline, Orange, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties, Virginia, from 1895 to 2022, courtesy of NOAA's Climate at a Glance program.

Weather or climate? Weather is the atmosphere over minutes to months — what's happening outside now. Climate is what to expect from patterns of 30 years or more: climate is the hot summer you expect, weather the warm, rainy day you get.

The long view

Since 1895, annual average temperature around the park has risen about 0.2 °F per decade, and annual precipitation about 0.21 inches per decade. By 2100, Park Service scientists project the park's annual average temperature will rise 2.9 to 8.8 °F (best to worst case) and annual precipitation 8% to 14% (Gonzalez and others, 2018).

Rapid climate change is challenging national parks as never before — shifting wildlife migrations, more destructive storms threatening cultural resources and facilities, disrupted habitat.
