A long two-story white building with a columned porch — the fort's officers' quarters

The site

Fort Scott National Historic Site is near the Kansas–Missouri border, about 145 km (90 mi) south of Kansas City, in Bourbon County, Kansas.

  • Authorized: October 19, 1978.
  • Size: about 7 hectares (17 acres).
  • The fort: a U.S. Army post founded in 1842 and named for General-in-Chief Winfield Scott.
PeriodWhat happened
1842–1853The army guarded the "Permanent Indian Frontier." Its soldiers fought in the U.S.-Mexican War (1846–1848), protected the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails, surveyed unmapped country, and kept the peace with the tribes of the Great Plains. The post closed in 1853, when westward expansion made the idea of a permanent Indian frontier obsolete.
Late 1850sThe site saw the violence of Bleeding Kansas — the struggle over slavery in Kansas Territory that helped ignite the Civil War.
Civil WarThe town was a command post for a diverse Union infantry, with many Native American and African American soldiers — among them the First Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry.
LaterAfrican American schools opened on the site; their students included George Washington Carver and Gordon Parks.

The rocks beneath it

The site sits in the Central Lowland physiographic province. Its bedrock is Pennsylvanian sedimentary rock:

UnitWhereWhat it is
Fort Scott Limestoneunder most of the sitedense, fossil-rich limestone with a little shale
Cabaniss Formation (below it)small areas in the northwest and southa more varied mix of limestone, sandstone, shale (mudstone) and notable coal beds
Alluvium and stream terrace depositsthe southeast corneryoung, Quaternary surface deposits

Named for the fort: the Fort Scott Limestone takes its name from Fort Scott, but its type locality — the place that defines it — is a cement plant quarry just northeast of the site, in NE/4 section 19, T. 25 S., R. 25 E., Bourbon County (Jewett 1941).
