Hanstholm is an important fishing harbour in North Jutland, Denmark.

Understand

Only a little more than 2,000 people lives here, yet it is the third largest settlement in the whole Thy region. Visit Hanstholm for a day or two, or use the town as a base for exploring the wild nature of Thy National Park.

Get in

Hanstholm is the endpoint of national primary routes 26 & 29. Bus lines 96 and 322 connects Hanstholm to Thisted several times per day. In Thisted there are connections to other regional bus lines, and the national rail system by the rail line Thybanen (Thy Line) souhtwards to the town of Struer.

By bicycle

Reach Hanstholm by bicycle from Klitmøller or Thisted. The trip from Thisted takes about 1½ hour.

Two long distance bike routes pass through Hanstholm.

• National Bicycle Route N2. This route has its endpoint in Hanstholm, and trace back all the way to Copenhagen. It is also known as the Hanstholm-Copenhagen Route,
• EuroVelo Route 12. This route reach Hanstholm from Nørre Vorupør and Agger in the south, or from Thorup Strand in Han Herred in the east. It is also known as Nordsø cykelruten (The North Sea Cycle Route) and follows about two thirds of the Jutlandic coastline for a total of 815 km.

• Hanstholm Harbour (Hanstholm Havn), ☏ +45 9655 0710, fax: +45 9655 0720. Denmark's largest commercial fishing harbour at a length of 4,5 km and harbouring a mix of both large and small vessels. The harbour employs about 1,000 people and the fish auction here (Monday to Friday from 07:00), is also the largest in Denmark with important exports to the rest of Europe. Smokehouse and eateries. It is possible to join one or two day guided recreational fishing tours to the North Sea.
• Hanstholm Lighthouse (Hanstholm Fyr), Tårnvej 21, ☏ +45 9796 1736. Open every day 09:00-21:00 (visitor centre). Visitor centre for the Thy National Park with magnificent landscape vistas from the top of the tower. The historic lighthouse is also home to a high-end lunch café and evening gourmet restaurant Lyspunktet, presenting many local delicacies from around Thy, and you can also rent an apartment and stay in the lighthouse.
• Bunker Museum Hanstholm, Molevej 29, ☏ +45 97 96 17 36. Open every day 10:00-17:00 (peak season June to August). Large engaging WWII museum fitted out in an old bunker system, part of the 'Atlantic Wall'; an immense German military defence network along the North Atlantic coasts of Europe. From the bunker battery in Hanstholm, the German Wehrmacht could repel an allied invasion and control a strategical important part of the North Sea, during the German occupation. The stronghold in Hanstholm was the largest German fortress in Denmark, manned with a total of 90 soldiers and huge 38 centimetres (15 in) cannons. Do

Most activities in Hanstholm is centered around the city's maritime heritage, especially the lively fisheries industry. You could try getting up early and attend the daily fish auctions taking place at 6.30 at Auktionsvej 11 [1] , or take a fishing trip to the rich fishing grounds of the Yellow reef about 2 hours sailing off shore. The town is also home of a lively windsurfing and kite surfing scene, locally branded as "Cold Hawaii". Yet another option is diving one of the many wrecks in the area - the nearest diveshop is Thy-Dyk [2]

Rederiet Gule Rev (Fishing excursions), Ørhagevej 171, Klitmøller, ☏ +45 97 97 53 94. Runs fishing trips to the yellow reef aboard one of their 5 vessels. 800 DKK per person or full boat from 9900 DKK.

• Surfklubben NASA (surfing club), Ørhagevej 14, Klitmøller. Is the local surfing organisation, it's not a commercial enterprise, but if you want to surf here - these are the guys to get in touch with
• Thy National Park. The national park stretches from the lighthouse in Hanstholm in the north to Agger Tange in the south and is bordered on the east by farmland. The park consists of dwarf shrubs, lakes and limestone slopes. In the national park,ruins from WWII can be seen and. Several types of birds as well as rabbits, deer and hedgehogs can be spotted.
• Hanstholm Camping. Offers a variety of activities in the high season, such as walking tours, tree climbing, sea kayak courses, diving in Thy National Park, kitesurfing and horse riding on Icelandic ponies.

Buy

If you are staying over in Hanstholm, and hasn't booked an all-inclusive stay at a hotel, it might be useful to know where to stock up on groceries. Hanstholm presents two options for this:

• Hanstholm Bytorv, Bytorvet 1, Hanstholm. Every day 07:00-21:00. Shopping center, including eateries, a bakery, apothecary, and a supermarket (365). Large car park with charging station and fossil fuels.
• Rema1000, Bytorvet 57, Hanstholm. every day 07:00-21:00. Discount supermarket. There is a parking lot here, but you will have to recharge your vehicle elsewhere.

Seafood

Hanstholm is a perfect spot to find fresh seafood staight from the North Sea. The fishing fleet here supply a large part of the Danish fish market, and there is a sizeable export to mainland Europe as well.
