On September 20, 2024, the Grand Canyon was the setting for the naturalization of 30 new American citizens from 11 countries. It was the park's first naturalization ceremony since 2019, which made it an especially joyful occasion, bringing people and families together.
The ceremony
The ceremony took place at the Mather Amphitheater. Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Ed Keable opened it by welcoming the new citizens. "As you take your oath of allegiance against the backdrop of one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, remember that the Grand Canyon reflects the boundless opportunities this country offers," he said.
James Uqualla, a Havasupai spiritual leader, offered a prayer and welcome that tied the day to the land and its heritage. U.S. Magistrate Judge Camille D. Bibles presided, welcoming the new citizens and encouraging them to embrace their new roles, and U.S. District Court Deputy Clerk Christina Davison administered the Oath of Allegiance.
The new citizens came from Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela and Vietnam. The Air Force ROTC Honor Guard from Northern Arizona University presented the colours, Audrey Stone of the Juniper Hill Band sang the national anthem, and the A-Train Sound performed.
After the oath, each new citizen received a certificate as friends and family cheered. Supervisory Immigration Services Officer Ramon Melocarela led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Judge Bibles gave closing remarks. The new citizens were then invited to take photographs and reflect, with the canyon behind them as a reminder of the opportunities and responsibilities of citizenship.
Constitution Day and Citizenship Day
The ceremony was part of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' annual celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, which honours citizenship and the values of the Constitution. It was one of many naturalization ceremonies held across the country from September 14 to 23, 2024.
