What it is
Noroviruses are a group of related viruses that cause gastroenteritis — inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Norovirus can be serious, especially for young children and older adults.
How it spreads
- from person to person;
- through contaminated food or water;
- by touching a contaminated surface.
Symptoms
Most common: diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and stomach pain.
Sometimes: fever, headache or body aches.
Treatment
There's no specific medicine for norovirus. Treatment is bed rest and plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
Prevention
Wash your hands properly and prepare food safely.
