The pancreas
The pancreas is a large gland behind the stomach, next to the first part of the small intestine.
- It sends digestive juices into the small intestine through the pancreatic duct.
- It releases the hormones insulin and glucagon into the blood.
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, which happens when digestive enzymes start digesting the pancreas itself. It can be acute or chronic — both are serious and can lead to complications.
