The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) is the system through which
US healthcare facilities report infections and safety data — the source of the
national figures on bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, *C.
difficile* and the rest.
A surveillance system used by thousands of separate institutions only produces
comparable numbers if every institution changes what it does at the same
moment and in the same way. **The quarterly NHSN newsletter is how that
happens.**
What a quarter's edition contains
Across recent editions, the recurring sections are:
- Analysis and protocol changes — the definitions and methods, which is
the part that alters what a reported number means - Antibiotic Use and Resistance (AUR) Module updates and enhancements
- Healthcare Personnel Safety Component highlights
- Long-term Care Facility Component highlights
- Dialysis Component updates, including quality improvement programme
deadlines - Biovigilance / Hemovigilance reminders
- Education and training information, and general NHSN news
Individual quarters carry specific consequences: one edition announced the
retirement of the CLIP Modules, another a **Q1 dialysis quality
improvement programme deadline**.
Why a newsletter rather than a manual
A protocol change published in a manual is authoritative and easy to miss. The
newsletter exists because the failure mode of a distributed surveillance
system is not disagreement but drift — facilities carrying on with last
year's definitions while the national analysis assumes this year's.
Every quarterly edition is, in effect, a synchronisation point for the data
that the national healthcare-associated infection reports are built from.
