The townhouse where a movement was organised

**Mary McLeod Bethune achieved her greatest recognition at this Washington, DC
townhouse.** The Council House was the first headquarters of the **National
Council of Negro Women** and was Bethune's last home in the city. From here,
Bethune and the NCNW developed the strategies and the programmes that advanced
the interests of African American women.

The two facts in that paragraph are the reason the site exists. It was
simultaneously an organisation's head office and one woman's house, and the
work that came out of it did not distinguish between the two.

From Baltimore and points north: the Baltimore-Washington Parkway south to
US Route 50 west, which becomes New York Avenue. Follow New York Avenue to
Massachusetts Avenue and continue west. Right onto 13th Street, one block,
then left onto N Street, another block, then right onto Vermont Avenue. **1318
is half a block up on the left.**

Street parking is limited and restricted — read the signs carefully. This
is a residential street in central Washington, and the parking rules are
enforced.
