These tiger-stripe fatigues carry the marks of use: missing buttons, hand-stitched reinforcements, a stamped mark inside the collar and a handwritten one upside down on the hem. The set, a jacket (.1) and pants (.2), was worn by a US Army sergeant during the Vietnam War and is held by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Jacket of the fatigues, view 1

The jacket

The jacket is printed cotton twill in black, brown and green tiger-stripe camouflage. It has a pointed collar of the same fabric and closes down the center front with six taupe plastic buttons. The long sleeves taper toward the wrists and end in cuffs that open at the side, each with two buttons and a godet above the opening. A patch pocket with a flap sits at the top of one sleeve; its flap has a buttonhole but no matching button. Two patch pockets with flaps sit at chest level: one holds two buttons and the other one, with the other button missing.

Two green patches with black embroidery are sewn above one chest pocket. The lower one reads "U.S. ARMY"; the upper has a thick horizontal line across the center with two mirrored half circles. Inside, a hanger loop sits below the collar at the center back, and four inches of seam allowance are folded back along the front opening, ending at the fabric's selvage. The text "M8" is stamped in black below the collar at the center back, and "4868 CA" is handwritten upside down along the hem of one side panel. The hem is double rolled and machine stitched.

The pants

The pants are printed cotton twill in brown, green and cream tiger stripe. They close at the center front with four buttons on one side and four buttonholes and a hidden button placket on the other. There are seven belt loops: two at the front, one along each side seam and three on the back. Each side has a slanted seam pocket.

Patches are part of how the pants were kept in service:

  • Three cotton twill adhesive patches, two green and one brown, sit below the button placket on one leg.
  • A further green adhesive patch at the top of the inseam is reinforced with hand stitching.
  • Inside, a green patch runs along the top of the inseam, again reinforced by hand, and two blue patches sit beside the hidden placket.

A seven-inch-wide patch pocket with a flap is sewn on each leg along the side seam, and two more pockets sit at the top of the back. Every pocket flap has two buttonholes that line up with two buttons; one button on a side-seam pocket and one on a back pocket are missing. The pants are unlined and unlabeled, machine sewn, with a double-fold hem. Illegible text is written in pink marker inside the center back at the top. There is a hole near the bottom of the hidden placket.
