People with a usual place to get medical care have a better quality of life. CDC's asthma program looked at where U.S. children usually go, using the 2011–2012 National Survey of Children's Health, which asked parents: What kind of place does the child go to most often?

Overall

Usual placeWith asthmaWithout asthma
Doctor's office74.7%71.2%
Clinic or health center14.2%17.4%
Hospital outpatient department2.8%2.2%
Emergency department3.4%2.1%

Children with asthma were more likely to rely on the ER; children without asthma were more likely to have no usual place at all.

By group

  • Age: among children 0–4, 5.9% with asthma used the ER as their usual place, against 2.2% without. Among teens 12–17, 7.6% without asthma had no usual place, against 4.9% with.
  • Sex: boys with asthma used the ER more (4.1% vs 2.1%); there was no difference among girls.
  • Race and ethnicity: Black children (5.2% with asthma, 5.1% without) and Hispanic children (5.6%, 3.2%) relied on the ER more than white children (1.8%, 0.9%). Hispanic children were the most likely to have no usual place (11.4% with asthma, 12.9% without), against 2.8% and 3.2% of white children.
  • Income: as family income rises, more children use a doctor's office, and fewer rely on the ER or have no usual place:

About the program

CDC's National Asthma Control Program, created in 1999, helps the millions of people with asthma in the United States control their disease. It runs national surveillance and funds states to improve their own and focus resources where they're needed.
