What it is

Cold weather can harm the body in different ways. Frostbite is an injury caused by freezing. Hypothermia — abnormally low body temperature — happens when your body loses heat faster than it can produce it.

Why it's dangerous

Hypothermia can make you sleepy, confused and clumsy. Because it comes on gradually and affects your thinking, you may not realize you need help — which is what makes it especially dangerous.

A body temperature below 95°F (35°C) is a medical emergency. Without prompt treatment, it can lead to death.

Who's at risk

  • Anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors in cold weather.
  • People who are cold and wet, or who stay in cold water too long.
  • Babies and older people especially. Babies can get it from sleeping in a cold room.
