Why minerals matter
Minerals keep your bones, muscles, heart and brain working properly, and help make enzymes and hormones.
Two kinds
| Kind | How much you need | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Macrominerals | larger amounts | calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, sulfur |
| Trace minerals | small amounts | iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt, fluoride, selenium |
Getting enough — or too much
- Food first: most people get the minerals they need from a varied diet.
- Supplements: sometimes a doctor recommends one.
- Limits: some health problems and medicines mean you need less of a mineral — people with chronic kidney disease, for example, must limit foods high in potassium.
