Ansan (안산) is a city in Gyeonggi, South Korea, on the coast of the Yellow Sea (locally called West Sea). The Yellow Sea lies to the west of the city, and portions of various islands lie within the city's jurisdiction. The largest and best-known of these is Daebudo. On land, the town of Gunpo is to the east, Anyang to the northeast, Siheung to the north and Hwaseong to the south.

What makes Ansan stand out among other similar cities is its ethnic composition - it has some of the largest and most vibrant Russian- and Chinese-speakers' communities, with a number of ethnic restaurants and shops in the relevant areas (around Ansan subway station and ERICA campus).

Ansan is a mid-sized city on the outskirts of Seoul. It is well integrated with Seoul's transport system, and generally speaking can be considered as a suburb. The city was planned by Park Jeong-hee in 1970 and is an important industrial center.

Ansan has one of Korea's largest immigrant communities. The percentage of multi-cultural families here is the highest in South Korea, although it is less known than Itaewon among English-speaking foreigners, as most immigrants here are Chinese and other Asian blue collar workers.

History

Ansan used to be Janghanggu County or Gosaya Holcha County in Goguryeo. It was promoted to Janggu County during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla. In the early Goryeo Dynasty, it was renamed Ansan-gun, and in the 9th year of King Hyunjong (1018), it became a vassal county of Suwon and became Ansan County.

Climate

Ansan's climate is very similar to that of nearby Seoul and Suwon.The following table is Suwon's climate. Compared to Incheon or Seoul, Suwon is relatively hotter and colder. It features continental climate. Ansan is close to the West Sea so there are a lot of winds from the sea.

Ansan's climate is not always identical to Incheon's or Suwon's, but it is much more similar to Incheon's climate than to inland Suwon's, and mainly falls under a temperate climate with monsoon rains. It is about 2 degrees cooler in summer and 2 degrees warmer in winter than Seoul or Suwon like the beach. Except for Daebudo Island, it is an area that has no characteristics of coastal cities, but it is quite pleasant because it has a combination of marine climate characteristics. Annual precipitation is about 1,300mm, which is as high as a general west coast area. The drainage facilities are well equipped, so there is no flood damage. However, due to the nature of the oceanic climate, it is very humid in summer. In summer, there are many days when humidity is more than 90% even on days when it does not rain, and 100% is also recorded during the night time.

Sangnoksu Station (상록수역) is a subway railway station on Seoul Subway Line 4. Sangoksu means "Evergreen Tree". The station is named after the book Sangnoksu (1935) by Sim Hun. The setting of the novel Sangnoksu is stream in Sangnok-gu.

• Subway & commuter 4ail: Ansan is well-connected to Seoul and neighboring cities via multiple subway lines:
  Line 4 (Oido Line) & Suin-Bundang Line: Share tracks through central Ansan, stopping at major hubs like Jungang, Gojan, and Ansan stations. Express trains reach Sadang or Seoul Station in under an hour.
• Seohae Line: Connects western Ansan (Siu and Wonsi stations) northward toward Bucheon and Gimpo Airport.

Ansan is on Subway Line 4 and the Suin–Bundang Line.
Travel times to the center of Ansan (Jungang station):

• From Seoul Station (Seoul): 1 hr 10 min
• From Geumjeong Station (Gunpo): 20 min
• From Oido Station (Siheung) : 20 min
• From Gimpo airport (Seoul) : 40 min

Ansan is served by eight subway stations (all on Line 4; five stations are shared with the Suin-Bundang Line), listed from the closest to Seoul, they are: Banwol, Sangnoksu, Hanyang University at Ansan, Jungang, Gojan, Choji, Ansan, Neunggil.

As of 2026, the Shin Ansan Line is under construction and is planned to connect Ansan with Yeouido through Gwangmyeong and Siheung. The project is expected to improve access between Ansan and central Seoul.

• Banwol (반월). Banwol is the first subway station of Ansan city, from the direction of Seoul.
• Sangnoksu (상록수). The distance between Sangnok and Banwol stations is the longest among the inter-station streets on Line No. 4 and has three tunnels.
• Hanyang Univ. at Ansan (한대앞). It has the name of Hanyang Univ. at Ansan Station, but it is not located right in front of the school. So a shuttle bus is running.
• Jungang (중앙). On Seoul Subway Line 4 and Suin Bundang Line, in a central commercial area. It is a busy station, the one closest to the bus terminal.
• Gojan (고잔). There is a Koryeo university Ansan Hospital nearby, and Ansan City Hall is 1.2 km away.
• Choji (초지). Near the station, Shin Ansan University is located. Transfer with Line 4, Suin-Bundang Line and Seohae Line.
• Ansan (안산). In the western part of Ansan City.
• Singil Oncheon (신길온천). The name refers to a hot spring to be built when the station was named. It never came into existence.

The Suin-Bundang Line runs from Cheongnyangni to Incheon. Besides sharing with Line 4, as mentioned above, it has one station in Ansan:

• Sari (사리).

If coming from Bucheon, then the Seohae (West Coast) Line would be your route. It calls at the following stations in Ansan:

• Dalmi (달미).
• Seonbu (선부).
• Siu (시우).
• Wonsi (원시).

• Ansan Bus Terminal (안산시외버스터미널). The Ansan Bus Terminal near Jungang Station provides daily bus service to Incheon International Airport and most cities in South Korea. Buses travel via Gimpo International Airport and Incheon International Airport. Express buses to Iksan, Busan, Dongdaegu, and Gwangju are also available. Buses departing near Sangnoksu Station connect to Suwon Station and Gangnam Station. Ansan has 53 bus lines with 537 buses operating in and out of the city limits, connecting the city with Seoul and other outlying Gyeonggi cities. The Ansan transfer center also has express city buses, city buses, and intercity buses linking to Banwol Industrial Estate, Sihwa Lake, and nearby cities. Note that most intercity buses will also stop at another large station near the nearby Ansan Station.

By bicycle

Hiring a bicycle is a good way to get around this city. There are bicycle sharing services such as 'Everybike (에브리 바이크)', 'KakaoBike (카카오 바이크)' and 'SOCAR elecle (쏘카 일레클)'.

• everybike(에브리바이크), help@everybike.io. It is a method of lending recognizing QR registered on blue regular bicycles placed around the street. The fare is reasonable and cheaper than other companies, but it can be a little difficult because it is not an electric bicycle.
• Kakao Bike (카카오바이크). It can be used after scanning the qr code, and the location and battery of the bike can be found through the app, and how to use the bike can be checked. It is a structure in which a rate is set in proportion to the time you ride it

City Tour Bus operates from 10:00 to 17:00 every Wednesday and Saturday from April to December but it is flexible according to climate. You must make a reservation through telephone or the website. The telephone numbers are 031-407-0101 and 031-413-1212. The bus boarding place is at Exit 2 of Jungang Station on subway line No. 4. In a regular tour, there are five courses. The first course is a tour about Ansan culture and arts. The second is a tour about multicultural streets and traditional markets. The third is about Daebu Haesolgil which means pathway along the Daebu Island. The fourth is about 'Daebu Bada Hyanggi Theme Park'. The fifth is about experiencing art in Daebu. You can take a course freely, but it has to involve over 30 people. In the experience tour, there are several courses including mud flat experience and salt pond experience.

Regular taxi

You can take a taxi at taxi stand. Basic fare of regular taxi is around ₩4,800. The taxi stand is near the bus station.

As of July 2023, the basic fare for regular taxis is ₩4,800 (₩5,800 at night), with a surcharge of ₩100 applied according to time and distance. (The basic fare is up to 1.6 km (1 mi), plus ₩100 per 135 m.)

Call taxi

When you move to another place where is hard to access, you can call a taxi. Basic fare of call taxi is around ₩3,800. You can call kakao taxi or T-map taxi. Kakao taxi is easier to call than T-map taxi.

• Ansan Botanical Garden (안산 식물원), 113, Seongho-ro, Sangnok-gu (take the bus from 'in front of botanical garden' bus stop or 'in front of underpass' bus stop. At first floor, exhibitions are divided into four zones-A zone, B zone, C zone and D zone. In the A zone, it exhibits relics from ancient times. You can learn about Ansan's history. In the B zone, you can learn about values of mud flat. Mud flat has been providing living foundation for Ansan resident. In the C zone, You can learn about Ansan's industry. Ansan's major industry is not only agriculture but also fishing and salt farms. So you can see farming implements and so on. In the D zone, you can see traditional remains which are used in daily life. It is divided into three section - food, clothing and shelter. In addition, you can see model and video clip about Dunbaemi play. It is a traditional play in Ansan.
• Ansan Light House (누에섬 등대전망대), Mt. #170 (Silkworm Island), Seongam-dong, Danwon-gu. It is called silkworm island because it shapes like silkworm. Road to light house is appeared at the time of low tide, but it is disappeared at high tide times. So tourists have to check the tide time. It has observatory and exhibition room for tourists.
• Ansan Hwajeong English Village (안산 화정 영어마을), 97, Kkodumul-gil, Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 31-484-6100. It is also known as Gyeonggi English Village Ansan Camp.
• Ansan Olympic Museum, 604 Gojan-dong Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 31 481 4900. There is a fitness center. Many local people work out in the gym.
• Byeolmangseong Fortress (별망성지(別望城址)), 656, Choji-dong, Danwon-gu (20 minutes on foot after getting off at Primorye Station on the West Sea Line). It is a coastal fortress built of stones by connecting two shallow mountain peaks on the beach to prevent Japanese pirates from invading the coast through Namyang Bay in the early Joseon Dynasty.

Daebu Island (대부도), 1-1, Daebudong-dong, Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 1899-1720. Daebudo is also known as 'the Hawaii of Ansan.' Daebudo is connected to the Sihwa seawalls, so it has become a land of Ansan. However, it still has the romance and lyricism of an island in various places.

Tando Port (탄도항), 717-5 Seongam-dong, Danwon-gu. Tando Port is located in Tando island, which is crossed on the path to Daebudo. Tando Port is also known as picturesque sunset spot.

• Gosong Pavilion (고송정지), San 58, Hwajeong-dong, Danwon-gu. It is a pavilion of Joseon Dynasty. It is Gyeonggi-do Monument number 101.
• Glass Island (대부도 유리섬), 3-13 Daebunam-dong, Danwon-gu. This island is famous for the Daebudo Glass Island Museum, which includes a glass art gallery, showcase and outdoor sculpture park. ₩10,000 for adults and ₩9,000 for children.

• Hwarang Recreation Area (화랑유원지), 667 Choji-dong, Danwon-gu. This is an amusement park that covers an area of 63 hectares. It has spaces for cultural relaxation, Hwarang Lake and trails, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, etc.
• Hong Jeonghui Gate of Filial Duty (홍정희 효자문), 748 Daebunam-dong, Danwon-gu (Take Line 4 subway to Ansan or Jungang Station, then transfer to bus 123 toward Daebu Island and finally walk or take a taxi to Hong Jeong-hee’s Filial Piety Gate.). It is a memorial gate for the filial piety of Hong Jeong-hui.
• Jaetmeori Local God Shrine (잿머리 성황당), San 76, Seonggok-dong, Danwon-gu. It is a shrine to the village deity that was built in Koryo Dynasty during the reign of King Seongjong (1469-1494) to offer sacrifice to heaven.
• Korean Juniper Tree in Palgok-ri (팔곡리 향나무), 59-3 Palgok 1-dong, Sangnok-gu. It was designated as monuments 32 in Gyeonggi-do
• Ojeonggak Pavilion (오정각), 29 Hwajeong dong, Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 31-481-2798. It is a pavilion that was built in 1870 by King Gojong, the last king of the Joseon Dynasty.
• Pung Island, Pungdo-dong, Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 31-481-2000. It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Incheon to Pung Island by passenger ship.

• Seongpo Arts Park, 582 Seongpo-dong, Sangrok-gu. Seongpo Arts Park adjoins a residential area, so it is a good resting place for locals.
• Starlight Village Photo Land (별빛마을포토랜드), 1723, Suin-ro, Sangnok-gu, ☏ +82 31-484-5050. 15:00-23:00. A place full of colorful light exhibitions, you can take various photos of memories. ₩8,000.
• Tomb of Yi Ik (이익선생묘). The tomb of Silhak scholar Yi Ik of the late of Chosun Dynasty.
• Damunhwa street (다문화거리), Damunhwa road Wongok-dong Danwon-gu. 24 hours. One of Ansan's most vibrant urban centers, where you can experience a unique atmosphere of diverse cultures. The street was naturally formed as foreign workers and immigrants from countries such as China, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Thailand began to settle here in the late 1990s. Free.
• Tando Fishing Village (탄도어촌체험마을), 17-34, Daebu Hwanggeum-ro, Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 507-1322-3745. 09:00-20:30. A place where you can catch various creatures such as crabs and conch in the tidal flat. For adults ₩14,000, hild ₩12,000.
• Sunset observatory (낙조전망대), San 23, Daebubuk-dong, Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 1899-1720. Open 24 hours. A place where you can see the red sunset with the beautiful sea.

• Paper art museum (종이미술관), Daenam-ro 233, Danwon-gu, ☏ +82 32-887-0606. 10:00-18:00. It is the first paper-making art museum in Korea. It has a children's art museum, a traditional play experience center, a hanok experience center, and a craft making experience center. For adults ₩9,000, child ₩6,000.

• Visit the Chinatown around the Ansan Station, an area with lots of Chinese, Indian and Central Asian restaurants. As it serves the local immigrant community, it has a more authentic feel to it than anything you can find in Seoul.
• Wol-pi Art Library (월피예술도서관), 32, Gwangdeoksanan-gil. Library 09:00-22:00, Children's Archives 09:00 - 18:00; closed Mon. On the first floor, there is an art lounge, children's archives, silver bookshelf; on the second floor, art, comprehensive archives, digital corners; and on the third floor, there is a club room and lounge.
• Ansan Reed Marsh Park (안산갈대습지공원), 172 Haean-ro, Sangrok-gu, ☏ +82 31-481-3180. Mar–Oct: 10:00-18:00, Nov–Feb: 10:00-17:00 (closed Mon). South Korea's first large-scale artificial wetland created for eco-water treatment. Features extensive wooden boardwalks over reed beds, a bird observation deck, and an environmental education center. Free.

Festivals

There are several regular festivals in Ansan.

• Ansan M Valley Rock Festival, 1481-10, Daebuhwanggeum-ro, Danwon-gu. Ansan Valley Rock Festival is held every July.
• Seongho Cultural Festival (성호 문화제), 131, Seongho-ro, Sangnok-gu, ☏ +82 31-481-2798, +82 31-415-0041. Traditional folk performances and games, held yearly in May.
• Moonlight Festival in Wol-pi (월피동 달빛축제), 45, Sinang-ro. It is a representative festival in Wolpi-dong that everyone enjoys based on harmony and communication among local residents. It is a rich festival full of food, things to see and enjoy by operating various experience booths and food booths such as work presentations, exhibitions, magic, and balloon art.
• Urban Regeneration Street Culture Festival (도시 재생 거리 문화 축제), 643-20, Gojan-dong. Urban Regeneration Street Culture Festival is a street culture festival specializing in public design. You can enjoy busking, performances, and various experience booths.
• Ansan Kim Hong-do Festival (김홍도축제), 259 Hwarang-ro, Danwon-gu, Ansan-si (Hwarang Recreation Area). 10:00-20:00. An annual festival themed around Kim Hong-do, a famous Joseon-era painter associated with Ansan. The festival offers various cultural programs, including traditional performances, cultural experiences, and traditional games. The 2026 festival will be held from October 23 to 25 at Hwarang Recreation Area.

• OK Financial Group Okman, 422, Yongsin-ro, Sangrok-gu (near Sangroksu subway station line 4). A professional volleyball team that plays in the Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO). Their home arena is Sangnoksu Gymnasium. They were known as OK Savings Bank Rush & Cash until 2020. You can buy tickets by online (the website is in Korean only) or ticket box on site.
• Flying. Due to Ansan's location along the sea and the surrounding islands, there are a number of companies that offer test flights in light and ultra-light airplanes for an hour or so, including views of most of the nearby islands. These usually cost somewhere around ₩80,000 depending on the duration of the flight.
• Biking. Bike paths exist throughout Ansan, making it more bicycle friendly than the average city. Bicycles can be hired from Gojan and Jungang stations. Bicycle stations are gradually increasing. There is a dedicated cycle road with picnic benches beyond the Lake Park that run alongside the river and terminates at Ansan Waterfowl park. Ansan's public bike service is called 'Pedalro'.

Ansan has several large parks. 'Hosu' (Lake Park) is within walking distance from Jungang station (15 minutes) and has several festivals during the middle of the year. Another park is situated beyond Ansan Wa Stadium, approximately 20 minutes walking distance from Gojan station and features Ansan Art Museum and a lake with a walking path that is lit by night.

Especially, reed marsh and waterside square is good for walking. At the center of the square, you can see outdoor performances. Sleep

There are a bunch of cheap love motels in Ansan. To find these cross the street from the station, go 5 or 6 blocks and veer to your left a street or two. They range from between ₩50,000 to ₩80,000, and most will have large TV's with cable, Internet and PC, and some nicer ones even have baths.

Hotels, in the standard sense, are rare in Ansan and are mostly 'business' hotels serving foreign visitors who visit Ansan's large industrial complex. Hotel 'Hi-Vice' is a basic business hotel and may serve for foreign visitors, with room rates ₩40,000-120,000 it is opposite Jungang Station and also features a wedding hall. There is also an international hotel located close to Sangoksu Station. However, as mentioned above, many motels are on par with 3-4 star hotels and are typically rather cheap.

Guest house is in Hanyang University. However, you need a permission from Hanyang University. Fee of standard room is ₩129,000, twin room, deluxe double and deluxe twin for ₩176,000 and Royal suite for ₩400,000. They furnished super high speed of Internet, central heating system, individual air condition, available international phone call at anytime and satellite broadcasting that provide variety of internal and external channels.
