Esta página también está en Español: Emergencias químicas — lo que dice la evidencia
When a hazardous chemical is released, it can harm people's health.
How releases happen
- By accident — an industrial accident, for example.
- On purpose — such as a terrorist attack with a chemical weapon.
The chemicals
| Kind | Examples |
|---|---|
| Developed by military organizations for warfare | nerve agents such as sarin and VX |
| Used in industry | chlorine, ammonia, benzene |
| Made from everyday items | some can be made from household cleaners |
Protecting yourself
Nothing guarantees safety in a chemical emergency, but there are things you can do to protect yourself.
- Have a disaster plan. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses.
- Expect stress, and get support. If you go through a disaster, feeling stressed is normal — and you may need help finding ways to cope.
