What happens

With diabetes, your blood glucose (blood sugar) runs too high. Over time, that can damage the covering of your nerves, or the blood vessels that bring oxygen to them. Damaged nerves may stop sending messages, or send them slowly or at the wrong times.

This damage is called diabetic neuropathy — and more than half of people with diabetes get it.

Symptoms

  • numbness in the hands, legs or feet;
  • shooting pains, burning or tingling;
  • nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea;
  • problems with sexual function;
  • urinary problems;
  • dizziness when changing position quickly.

Diagnosis

Your doctor diagnoses diabetic neuropathy with a physical exam and nerve tests.

Prevention and treatment

  • Controlling your blood sugar can help prevent nerve problems, or keep them from getting worse.
  • Treatment may include pain relief and other medicines.

Hypothyroidism develops so slowly that most people miss it for months or years — the tiredness, the weight, the cold, the low mood all arrive gradually enough to be explained away. The treatment is one daily tablet, and getting the dose right takes a specific, predictable schedule of blood tests.
