Health professionals are well placed to help people stop smoking — but how often do they raise it? A CDC QuickStats from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey asked adults who currently smoke cigarettes whether, in the past 12 months, a doctor, dentist or other health professional had advised them about ways to stop smoking or prescribed medicine to help them quit.
A current smoker, in the survey, is someone who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life and now smokes every day or some days. In 2022, an estimated 11.6% of U.S. adults were current cigarette smokers.

The numbers
Overall, 42.0% of current smokers had been advised about quitting in the past year.

What stands out
- Age. The share advised to quit rose with age, from 29.2% of smokers aged 18–44 to 57.0% of those 65 and over.
- Sex. Men were less likely than women to be advised — overall, and especially among smokers aged 18–44, where 22.5% of men heard the advice compared with 39.6% of women.
The youngest group of smokers, and young men above all, were the least likely to be offered help.
Estimates come from household interviews of a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population, and each has a 95% confidence interval, shown as error bars on the chart and listed in the supplementary table.
