Norovirus is tracked mainly through outbreaks, not individual cases. To report a norovirus outbreak, contact your state or local health department.

What gets reported

State, local and territorial health departments are not currently required to report individual norovirus cases to CDC. Many cases never come to light anyway: people often don't seek care, and most hospitals and doctors' offices don't routinely test for norovirus.

  • Health care providers should report every outbreak of acute gastroenteritis, including suspected norovirus outbreaks, to the appropriate state, local or territorial health department.
  • Health departments are encouraged to report all suspected and confirmed norovirus outbreaks through the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS) and CaliciNet.

CDC's reporting systems

CDC collects norovirus data through several systems:

  • NORS
  • CaliciNet
  • NoroSTAT
  • NREVSS and NREVSS Enhanced

Surveillance for estimates and strains

Beyond outbreak reports from health departments, CDC uses two platforms to estimate how much norovirus illness there is and to follow genotype trends over time.

PlatformWhat it does
New Vaccine Surveillance Network (NVSN)Study sites run active, population-based surveillance of hospitalizations and outpatient visits for acute gastroenteritis in children, as well as for acute respiratory illness
NoroSurvA global network that tracks which norovirus genotypes are circulating among hospitalized children under 5 in countries on several continents. Participating labs follow standardized protocols for dual typing, the latest naming system, which assigns each strain a polymerase (P) type and a capsid (C) type
