River Raisin National Battlefield Park preserves, commemorates and
interprets the January 1813 battles of the War of 1812 and their aftermath.
They produced **the greatest victory for Tecumseh's Confederation and the
British**, and the greatest defeat for the United States in that war.
The sentence that defines the park
**The aftermath led to U.S. Indian laws that forced the removal, relocation
and assimilation of native nations, an aftermath that continues today.**
Most battlefield parks end their story at the battle. This one names the
battle as the beginning of something, and puts the consequence in the present
tense.
A defeat of that scale demanded an answer, and the answer was not military.
The removal and relocation laws that followed reshaped the map of native
nations across the continent, and the park's stated position is that the
process has not ended.
What there is to do
The programme leans hard towards interpretation rather than terrain: **arts
and culture, craft demonstrations, cultural demonstrations, live music and
theatre**, alongside scenic driving.
For a site whose subject is what a battle did to the people who won it, a
craft demonstration is not decoration — it is the exhibit.
The weather
There is a saying about Michigan weather: **"If you don't like the weather
