What it is

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Dashboard (NWD) gives decision makers, emergency managers and the public critical information during droughts, floods and other extreme events, and in normal times. It helps inform decisions that protect lives and property before and during those events.

  • It draws on the site-by-site data of the USGS National Water Information System.
  • It links to USGS WaterAlert, which sends users instant, customized updates on water conditions.
  • It is part of the USGS effort to meet 21st-century science needs.

Visit it at dashboard.waterdata.usgs.gov.

It combines USGS real-time water data and other federal water-hazard data in one modern, mobile-friendly map of the whole country — for example, streamflow after Hurricane Elsa in July 2021, streamflow over drought conditions, or rainfall across the Southeast 24 hours after Elsa reached Florida.

What it does

  • Summarizes and displays data from more than 13,500 USGS stations.
  • Assesses hydrologic conditions, both water quality and quantity.
  • Runs summary reports on USGS water data.
  • Adds hazard and weather data from other federal agencies.
  • Refreshes every minute from the National Water Information System.
  • Supports custom, reusable views at any scale.
  • Works with WaterAlert and the Next Generation USGS Water Data for the Nation products for advanced needs.

The result makes USGS water data, and partners' weather-related data, usable in place and time, for a national view of water conditions.

Its layers

LayerWhat it shows
USGS stations7 kinds of current conditions: streamflow, surface-water levels, groundwater levels, spring water levels, water quality, rainfall, atmospheric data
Weather9 kinds, from federal partners: hurricanes, alerts, radar, recent rainfall, rainfall forecast, snow, cloud cover, temperature, drought
Hydrographymaps of rivers, watersheds and aquifers
Basemaps16 options

Data come from sources named in the application, including USGS, the National Weather Service and the National Integrated Drought Information System.
