Acute care and other short-term stay hospitals — general hospitals,
critical access hospitals, oncology hospitals, military and VA hospitals — are
the largest group of NHSN reporters, and three components are open to them.
The three components

The split is worth noticing. The same hospital reports on three different
populations — patients, staff, and the blood supply — through three separate
components with their own protocols and manuals.
Where a new facility starts
The order is deliberate:
- Enroll the facility
- Training resources
- The educational roadmap
- The Patient Safety Component Manual — a single PDF of about 6 MB
The roadmap sits between the training and the manual for a reason. The PSC
Manual is the definitive reference and is not a document anyone reads
front-to-back; the roadmap is what tells a new infection preventionist which
chapters apply to what their hospital has actually committed to reporting.
A facility that goes straight to the manual finds several hundred pages of
definitions with no way to tell which of them it needs.
