Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a group of treatments for infertility in which both eggs and sperm are handled.
How it works
- Eggs are removed from the ovaries.
- They are mixed with sperm to make embryos.
- The embryos are placed back in the parent's body.
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is the most common and most effective kind of ART.
Other options it can involve
- Donor eggs or donor sperm
- Embryos frozen earlier
- A surrogate, who becomes pregnant with sperm from one partner of the couple
- A gestational carrier, who becomes pregnant with an egg from one partner and sperm from the other
The most common complication
The most frequent complication of ART is a multiple pregnancy. It can be prevented, or made less likely, by limiting how many embryos are placed in the parent's body.
