Connective tissue supports many parts of the body, such as the skin, eyes and heart. It works like a "cellular glue," giving body parts their shape and keeping them strong, and helps some tissues do their work. It is made of many kinds of proteins; cartilage and fat are both types of connective tissue.
The disorders
More than 200 disorders affect connective tissue. They fall into several groups:
- Genetic disorders, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Marfan syndrome and osteogenesis imperfecta.
- Autoimmune disorders, such as lupus and scleroderma.
- Cancers, including some kinds of soft tissue sarcoma.
Each has its own symptoms and needs its own treatment.
