A CDC QuickStats from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey shows how many adults took prescription medication at any time in the previous 12 months.

  • Women were more likely than men to take prescription medication overall and at ages 18–44 and 45–64.
  • At 65 and over, men and women were equally likely.
  • Use rose with age, for men and for women.

How it was measured

People were asked whether, at any time in the past 12 months, they had taken prescription medication. Estimates come from household interviews with a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population; the chart's error bars are 95% confidence intervals.
