Stem cells are cells that can develop into many different kinds of cells in the body. They act as the body’s repair system. There are two main types: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.
Three ways they differ from other cells
- They renew themselves. Stem cells can divide and make more of themselves over a long time.
- They are unspecialized. On their own, they don’t carry out particular jobs in the body.
- They can specialize. They have the potential to become specialized cells, such as muscle cells, blood cells and brain cells.
Why doctors and scientists are interested
Stem cells could help in many areas of health and medical research:
- Understanding disease. Studying them may help explain how serious conditions such as birth defects and cancer arise.
- Growing new cells and tissues. One day, stem cells may be used to make cells and tissues to treat many diseases, including:
