Tucson, Arizona is home to the nation's largest cacti. The giant saguaro
is the universal symbol of the American west, and these plants are **found
only in a small portion of the United States**. Saguaro National Park protects
them, east and west of the modern city of Tucson, where you can see the
enormous cacti silhouetted against a desert sunset.
Two districts, and a navigation warning
The park has two districts separated by the city of Tucson. The address
for the West District is 2700 N Kinney Rd.
**The park recommends against using mobile mapping applications to search for
either district.** Instead, work out which one you are visiting, look up its
physical address on the park's directions page, and enter that into your
phone.
A park telling visitors not to search for it by name is unusual enough to take
seriously: a search for "Saguaro National Park" can send you to the wrong side
of a city.
When to be outside
| Season | Temperatures |
|---|---|
| Winter | Daytime from the low 50s to the high 70s |
| Summer | Mid-90s to low 110s |
In summer, restrict outdoor activities to before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.
That is the park's own strong recommendation, and at 110°F it is not
cautiousness.
Late summer into early autumn brings heavy monsoon rains, giving cooler
but more humid afternoons and evenings — and flash flooding is a concern
at that time of year.
