The urethra is the tube that carries urine out of the body. In men it is long, runs through the penis and also carries semen; in women it is short and sits just above the vagina.
Disorders
Urethral problems can come from aging, illness or injury:

| Urethral stricture | a narrowing of the urethra's opening |
| Urethritis | inflammation of the urethra, sometimes from infection |
| Urethral cancer | a rare cancer, more common in men |
Symptoms
- pain or difficulty passing urine;
- bleeding or discharge from the urethra.
Diagnosis and treatment
Doctors use urine tests, x-rays and a look inside the urethra with a scope called a cystoscope. Treatment depends on the cause and may include medicines and, in severe cases, surgery.
