When a long-term care facility runs a point-of-care SARS-CoV-2 test — a
rapid device used at the bedside rather than a sample sent to a laboratory —
the result still has to reach public health authorities. The **Point of Care
Test Reporting Tool** is the National Healthcare Safety Network's separate
reporting route for exactly that.
The part that matters
**NHSN routes reported point-of-care laboratory test result data to the public
health agency at the local or state level with jurisdictional authority and
responsibility for receiving those data.**
That sentence is the whole value of the tool. Reportable disease results are
owed to a specific agency, determined by where the facility sits — and a care
home running rapid tests has no reason to know which agency that is, or how it
wants the data formatted.
Before automated routing, the failure mode was not facilities refusing to
report. It was results reported into the wrong place, or into a system that
did not forward them, while everyone involved believed the obligation had been
met.

The CSV import is the practical one. A facility testing staff and residents
regularly generates far more results than a form can absorb, and a reporting
route that is too slow to use is a reporting route that stops being used.
