If you may have been exposed to anthrax, starting antibiotics quickly and taking them as directed prevents serious illness and death. Most people will be given 100 mg tablets of doxycycline hyclate. Many children, and some adults, can't swallow pills — so caregivers can mix the medicine into food or drink. Each dose is taken every 12 hours for as long as public health or health care officials advise.

How to Crush Doxycycline for Children & Adults Who Cannot Swallow Pills. CDC.

What you need

  • 1 doxycycline hyclate tablet (100 mg)
  • 1 metal teaspoon
  • 1 oral syringe or medicine spoon, if available
  • 2 small bowls
  • 4 teaspoons (20 mL) of drinking water
  • A food or drink to improve the taste: milk (including breast milk or infant formula), chocolate milk, chocolate pudding, or apple juice mixed with 2 to 4 teaspoons of sugar. Doxycycline works equally well with or without food or milk.

Supplies for preparing doxycycline: one tablet, a teaspoon, two small bowls, a little drinking water and a food or drink to improve the taste.

Step 1: Crush

  1. Put 1 tablet in a small bowl and add 4 teaspoons (20 mL) of water.
  2. Let it soak at least 10 minutes to soften.
  3. Crush it with the back of the spoon until no pieces remain, then stir well.

Step 2: Measure

Find the person's weight in the chart — or, if weight is unknown, their age — and measure that much of the mixture from the first bowl into a second bowl. The amounts are based on 2.2 mg per kg. For a ½-teaspoon dose, fill the spoon halfway or use an oral syringe; slightly more is better than not enough.

WeightAgeAmount of doxycycline-and-water mixture
12 pounds or lessUnder 1 month½ teaspoon (2.5 mL)
13 to 25 pounds1 to 11 months1 teaspoon (5 mL)
26 to 50 pounds1 to 5 years2 teaspoons (10 mL)
51 to 75 pounds6 to 8 years3 teaspoons (15 mL)
76 pounds or more (adult dose)9 years or older4 teaspoons (20 mL) — the whole first bowl

Step 3: Mix

Add 3 teaspoons of milk, chocolate milk, chocolate pudding or sweetened apple juice to the measured dose and mix well.

Step 4: Give the dose

Give the entire contents of the second bowl and make sure all of it is swallowed. That is one dose. Repeat every 12 hours — once in the morning and once at night — every day for as long as directed.

To store it: put it in a covered bowl or cup, label it with the date, time and contents, keep it away from children and pets at 68–77°F (20–25°C), and throw it away after 24 hours, making a fresh mixture for later doses.

Side effects and warnings

Doxycycline may cause diarrhea, sun sensitivity, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting. Keep taking it as directed until your provider says to stop.

  • Don't take doxycycline if you're allergic to any of its ingredients or to any tetracycline antibiotic.
  • Get care immediately for signs of an allergic reaction: hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
  • Report any reaction to the FDA's MedWatch program, 1-800-FDA-1088.
