What the bile ducts do

The liver makes a digestive juice called bile, which the gallbladder stores between meals. When you eat, the gallbladder pushes bile into tubes called bile ducts, which carry it to the small intestine. Bile helps break down fat and helps the liver get rid of toxins and wastes.

The cancer

Bile duct cancer is rare. It can form in the parts of the ducts outside the liver or inside it; cancer of the ducts outside the liver is much more common.

Risk factors

  • inflammation of the bile duct;
  • ulcerative colitis;
  • some liver diseases.

Symptoms

  • jaundice;
  • itchy skin;
  • fever;
  • abdominal pain.

Diagnosis and treatment

Tests may include a physical exam, imaging of the liver and bile ducts, blood tests and a biopsy. Treatments include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
