Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, including older adults. There are four main types, each different, and doing all four brings the most benefit.
| Type | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Endurance (aerobic) | raises your breathing and heart rate | brisk walking or jogging, dancing, swimming, biking |
| Strength | makes your muscles stronger | lifting weights, using a resistance band |
| Balance | helps prevent falls | |
| Flexibility | stretches muscles and keeps your body limber |
Getting started
- Start slowly: if you have not been active, begin gently and work up to your goal.
- How much: it depends on your age and health.
- Ask first: check with your health care provider about what is right for you.
