Whenever you look at something, several muscles move both of your eyes to focus on it. If those muscles have a problem, the eyes do not work as they should.
Two common disorders
There are many kinds of eye movement disorders. Two of the most common are:
- Strabismus: the two eyes do not point in the same direction, giving "crossed eyes" or "walleye".
- Nystagmus: fast movements of the eyes that the person cannot control, sometimes called "dancing eyes".
Causes
Some eye movement disorders are present from birth. Others develop over time and may be linked with other problems, such as injuries.
Treatment
Treatments include:
- glasses;
- patches;
- eye muscle exercises;
- surgery.
Some kinds, such as most forms of nystagmus, cannot be cured.
