Prostate cancer screening is the clearest case in cancer medicine of a
decision rather than a recommendation: the benefits and the harms are both
real and they trade against each other. The CDC's Spanish-language materials
are built around that, and there are four of them.
The materials
- Datos sobre el cáncer de próstata — an overview of symptoms, screening
and treatment options, for Hispanic and Latino men. - Hablemos sobre el cáncer de próstata — how to make an **informed
decision** about screening. - Cáncer de próstata: prefiero estar informado — **the advantages and the
disadvantages** of screening, listed. - Información sobre el cáncer de próstata para cuidadores y seres queridos
— for the caregivers and loved ones of men considering screening, and of
men who have prostate cancer.
Plus a video, *¿Debería hacerme la prueba de detección del cáncer de
próstata?*, helping men understand their options, with a transcript.
The one worth noticing
The fourth leaflet is the unusual one. Three of the four address the man
making the decision; the fourth addresses the people around him.
That reflects how the decision is actually made. A man weighing whether to be
screened — knowing that a positive result may lead to a biopsy, and that
treatment can cause permanent incontinence or erectile dysfunction — talks to
his partner and his family. If they only know that screening is good and
refusing it is reckless, the conversation pushes one way regardless of what
the evidence says.
Giving the family the same balanced account is what makes an informed decision
possible for the man in the middle of it.
Why in Spanish
A screening decision aid that exists only in English is not available to the
people it is written for. Materials specifically for Hispanic and Latino men —
in their language, with audio description and transcripts — are the difference
between a resource existing and a resource reaching anyone.
