Harriet Tubman spent fifty more years working after the rescues

Harriet Tubman was guided by a deep faith and a devotion to family, freedom
and community. After emancipating herself and members of her family, she moved
them from Ontario, Canada to Fleming and Auburn, New York, in 1859.

The choice of destination was not incidental. **Central New York was a centre
for progressive thought, abolition and women's suffrage**, and Tubman
continued to fight for human rights and dignity there **until she died in
1913** — more than half a century after the move, and nearly fifty years after
emancipation.

That is the part of her life this park preserves: not the rescues, which are
famous, but the decades of ordinary sustained work that followed them.

What the park includes

• The Thompson Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and its
  parsonage
• Properties at 180 South Street, within the park's legislative boundary,
  operated by Harriet Tubman Home, Inc.

The weather in Auburn

Four distinct seasons. Autumn and spring are usually mild; summers tend to be
sunny, warm and humid.

Winter is the one to plan for. Conditions are variable and can change
quickly, snow in November is not uncommon, and the heaviest snowfall is
usually in January, averaging 33 inches.
