The ovaries
The ovaries are part of the female reproductive system. They produce eggs and make female hormones.
What cysts are
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs in or on an ovary. They usually form during ovulation, when the ovary releases an egg.
- Common: most women have them at some point.
- Usually harmless: most are small, cause no symptoms, and go away on their own. Many women learn of one only at a pelvic exam.
Symptoms, if any
- pressure
- bloating
- swelling
- pain in the lower abdomen, on the side of the cyst
What happens next
- Watching: your provider may suggest waiting to see if the cyst grows.
- Surgery may be needed if you have pain, are past menopause, or the cyst doesn't go away.
- Get help right away if a cyst bursts or causes bleeding.
- Prevention: birth control pills can help prevent new cysts.
Cancer is rare, but the risk rises with age.
Polycystic ovary syndrome
PCOS is a condition involving ovarian cysts. Women with it can have:
- high levels of male hormones;
- irregular or no periods;
- small ovarian cysts.
