The pituitary gland
Your pituitary is a pea-sized gland at the base of your brain. Called the "master control gland," it makes hormones that affect growth and the work of other glands.
Pituitary tumors
They're common, but often cause no health problems — most people who have one never know.
The most common type produces hormones, upsetting the body's hormone balance. That can cause endocrine diseases such as Cushing's syndrome and hyperthyroidism.
Symptoms
- headaches
- vision problems
- nausea and vomiting
- problems from too much of a hormone
Treatment
Pituitary tumors are usually curable. Treatment is often surgery to remove the tumor. Other options:
- medicines
- radiation therapy
- chemotherapy
