The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, in Cape Hatteras National Seashore, is an iconic historic landmark. In January 2024, the National Park Service announced that the first phase of a $19.2 million project to restore and rehabilitate it was about to begin.

What the project includes
Working with contractor Stone and Lime Historic Restoration Services of North Brookfield, Massachusetts, the Park Service planned to:
- rehabilitate the lighthouse interior and restore the exterior;
- repair and replace deteriorated materials and finishes;
- improve the landscape to enhance visits;
- make and install a replica first-order Fresnel lens.
The first phase

Visitors were told to expect construction across the whole area for at least 18 months, with changing access and temporary closures. A temporary beacon would shine from the outside of the tower, though sometimes switched off during work. The park store and restrooms were expected to stay open, and the park planned chances to watch construction, visit the Museum of the Sea and learn about the project as schedules allowed.
"After a lengthy and thoughtful planning process, we are excited to take this significant step towards preserving an iconic historic landmark," said David Hallac, superintendent of the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina.
