Know the facts

If you're part of the LGBTQ+ community, you've likely seen tobacco ads in magazines, newspapers and websites aimed at you: tobacco companies target your communities. Several factors tie commercial tobacco to more disease, disability and death in some groups — see CDC's page on LGBTQ+ health disparities.

Smoking raises your risk of lung cancer, heart disease, chronic bronchitis and other diseases. See how many people smoke today, overall and by group.

Real stories

LGBTQ+ people featured in Tips, living with — or lost to — smoking-related disease:

  • Angie P., 62, Ohio, began smoking menthols at 15 to cope with the fear that people wouldn't accept that she is gay. She wants LGBTQ+ people who smoke to love themselves and get help to quit: "I'd tell young LGBTQ+ people it's not worth it to smoke. Their lives and their health are worth more."
  • Brian I., 45, California, has HIV. He started smoking at 14; at 43, smoking combined with HIV gave him a stroke. He quit that day and hopes to regain full use of his right hand.
  • Ellie N., 57, Florida, never smoked. Working in a bar with many LGBT customers and plenty of smokers, she began having severe asthma attacks at 35 from secondhand smoke, and had to leave a job she loved. "I had trouble breathing. It was terrifying!"
  • Rose H., Texas, began smoking at 13. Her lung cancer spread to her brain; after many treatments, she died at 60.

About the words

LGBTQ+ here means lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, with the plus taking in people who are questioning, intersex, asexual or who hold other identities. Many studies cover only some of these groups; where the page says "gay," "lesbian" or "LGB," it follows the study cited. More research is needed on other groups.
