Welcome to space to ground, I’m sandra jones. This week a nasa astronaut returned to earth after their mission to the international space station and the crew onboard captured imagery of a celestial event. On sunday, nasa astronaut loral o’hara returned to ellington field in houston following her landing the day prior in kazakhstan on the soyuz ms-24 spacecraft alongside roscosmos cosmonaut oleg novitskiy and belarus spaceflight participant marina vasilevyskaya at 3:17 am et on april 6. O’hara spent a total of 204 days in space conducting science and research investigations onboard the international space station including investigating heart health, cancer treatments, and space manufacturing techniques during her stay aboard the orbiting laboratory. On april 8, a total solar eclipse crossed north america, passing over mexico, the united states, from texas to maine, and canada. Millions of people had the opportunity to witness this rare event in which the moon passes between the sun and earth and completely blocks out the face of the sun making the sky appear as if it were dawn or dusk. During the eclipse the crew onboard the international space station were also able to witness the eclipse and even capture imagery. To say that they were somewhat awestruck… well… take a listen! unbelievable! " "that is what I always wanted to see, right there! " you can see the umbra, or the moon's shadow, passing over earth as the space station orbited 260 miles above the northeastern coast of the united states and portions of the canadian provinces of quebec and new bruswick. Nasa recently announced the next rotational soyuz crew to fly to the international space station this fall. Nasa astronaut don pettit will launch on the roscosmos soyuz ms-26 spacecraft in september alongside roscosmos cosmonauts alexy ovchinin and ivan vagner.

This will be pettit’s fourth mission to the space station to conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations. He served as a science officer for expedition 6 in 2003, operated the robotic arm for sts-126 space shuttle endeavour in 2008, and served as a flight engineer for expedition 30/31 in 2012. Pettit has logged 370 days in space and conducted two spacewalks totaling 13 hours and 17 minutes. Interested in becoming an astronaut yourself?
