Every man is at risk of prostate cancer, and **the most common risk factor
is age**: the older a man is, the likelier he is to develop it.

The baseline, stated plainly:

Of every 100 men in the United States
Will develop prostate cancer at some pointabout 13
Will die of prostate cancerabout 2 to 3

Those two numbers together are the whole difficulty of this disease. Most men
who get prostate cancer do not die of it — which is why screening is a
decision rather than a default, and why finding a cancer is not automatically
a reason to treat it.

Where the risk is concentrated

**You are at higher risk of developing prostate cancer, or of dying from it,
if you are African American or there is a family history of prostate cancer.**

Compared with other men, **Black and African American men are more likely
to**:

  • Develop prostate cancer
  • Develop it at a younger age
  • Develop a more serious form of it
  • Die of it

The middle item is the one with a practical consequence. A screening
conversation timed to a population average happens too late for a group whose
disease arrives earlier — which is why the recommendation for Black men is to
talk to a provider about it sooner rather than at the same age as everyone
else.

A family history carries the same implication: the age at which a relative was
diagnosed matters as much as the fact of the diagnosis.
