Who it's for

Weight loss surgery helps people with extreme obesity lose weight. It may be an option if you can't lose weight through diet and exercise, or if obesity has caused you serious health problems.

How it works

There are different types.

  • Many limit how much food you can take in.
  • Some also change how you digest food and absorb nutrients.

Risks

Every type carries risks and complications, such as:

  • infections;
  • hernias;
  • blood clots.

After surgery

Many people lose weight quickly but regain some later. Following diet and exercise advice helps you keep most of it off, and you'll need medical follow-up for the rest of your life.
