The brain is the body's control centre. It runs your thoughts, memory, speech and movement and regulates many organs. With the spinal cord and peripheral nerves it makes up the nervous system, which carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body: nerves bring in information from the senses for the brain to process, and brain and nerves work together to move you and control the body's functions. A healthy brain does all this quickly and automatically.
A brain disease can affect how well you function and manage daily life.

Symptoms and treatment
Symptoms vary widely with the problem. Sometimes the damage is permanent. In other cases, surgery, medicines, or physical, occupational and speech therapy may cure the disease or ease its symptoms.
